New Delhi, 5th Aug: India and the Philippines today elevated their bilateral relationship to a “strategic partnership,” marking a historic day for diplomatic ties between the two nations. Following a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and visiting Philippine President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., the two countries signed a Strategic Partnership Declaration and a five-year plan of action to guide their collaboration.

During his opening remarks, Prime Minister Modi welcomed President Marcos Jr. and said the new partnership would provide “new momentum and depth” to relations, particularly in the areas of defense and security. “There has been progress in all sectors… and it is a matter of great pleasure that today we are creating a plan of action for the next five years,” Modi stated.

Responding to the Prime Minister, President Marcos Jr. expressed his gratitude and confirmed a shared vision for a free, stable, and prosperous Indo-Pacific. The visit, his first state visit to India, saw the signing of a key Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on defense cooperation. This pact is expected to deepen military-to-military engagement and expand collaborations beyond the recent BrahMos missile deal, which was a landmark arms export for India.

The leaders also agreed on a joint working group on maritime security and a pact for greater collaboration in space technology, underscoring their shared interest in upholding a rules-based international order in the Indo-Pacific. The new strategic partnership is seen as a significant move to strengthen a regional front amid growing geopolitical challenges.

With the Philippines serving as India’s country coordinator for ASEAN until 2027 and set to assume the ASEAN Chair in 2026, PM Modi expressed confidence that bilateral relations would further strengthen. President Marcos Jr. emphasized the importance of boosting economic ties, with a focus on digital technology, infrastructure, and renewable energy to support his country’s development.
