New Delhi, 18th June. In a recent report by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), India’s nuclear arsenal has been noted to exceed that of neighboring Pakistan, though both nations are actively modernizing their nuclear capabilities amidst global trends of increasing arsenals.
SIPRI’s analysis, released on Monday, reveals that India possessed an estimated 172 “stored” nuclear warheads as of January 2024, while Pakistan trailed closely behind with 170 warheads. The report underscores India’s slight expansion in its nuclear capabilities throughout 2023, alongside ongoing developments in nuclear delivery systems.
The think-tank’s findings highlight a broader trend of nuclear modernization among nine nuclear-armed nations, including the United States, Russia, China, France, and the United Kingdom. China notably increased its nuclear arsenal from 410 warheads in January 2023 to 500 by January 2024, indicating rapid growth in its nuclear capabilities.
Furthermore, SIPRI pointed out that nearly 2,100 deployed warheads are maintained at a high operational alert globally, primarily by Russia and the US, with China now also believed to have joined this operational readiness level for its nuclear arsenal.
