Noida, 30th Aug: Union Minister of Electronics and IT Ashwini Vaishnaw on Saturday inaugurated India’s first Tempered Glass Manufacturing Facility for Mobile Devices at Noida, set up by Optiemus Electronics in collaboration with Corning Incorporated (USA). The facility will produce high-quality tempered glass under the brand “Engineered by Corning” for domestic and global markets.

Speaking at the event, Vaishnaw said the initiative marks a big leap for Make in India, as the country moves towards manufacturing every component of mobile devices, including chips, cover glasses, laptops and server parts. He also announced that a Made in India chip will soon be launched.

The Minister underlined that India’s electronics production has grown six times in the last 11 years to reach ₹11.5 lakh crore, with exports crossing ₹3 lakh crore and generating 2.5 million jobs. He stressed that India’s strength lies in its design and R&D capabilities, citing the example of an IIT Madras-incubated startup that designed the country’s first microcontroller.

Vaishnaw also highlighted that India’s 7.8% GDP growth in Q1 FY26 reflects a stable and innovation-driven economy. He called upon youth to contribute to the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat and Viksit Bharat 2047.

Industry leaders, including Ashok Kumar Gupta, Chairman of Optiemus Infracom, and Pankaj Mahindroo, Chairman of ICEA, hailed the launch as a transformative moment for India’s electronics ecosystem. They noted that the tempered glass market in India exceeds 500 million pieces annually, valued at ₹20,000 crore, and presents vast opportunities for exports and MSME growth.

The Noida facility, built with an initial ₹70 crore investment, has an installed capacity of 25 million units annually, employing 600 people. In its second phase, with an additional ₹800 crore investment, it will scale up to 200 million units per year and generate 4,500 direct jobs.
