Brussels/New Delhi, 10th Jan: Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal concluded a significant two-day visit to Brussels on January 8–9, marking a decisive step forward in the India–European Union Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations.

During his visit, Goyal held high-level dialogues with the European Union’s Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security, Maroš Šefčovič. The leaders provided strategic guidance to their negotiating teams to resolve pending issues and expedite the conclusion of a comprehensive trade agreement.

The ministerial engagement followed intensive technical-level discussions between Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal and the European Commission’s Director-General for Trade, Sabine Weyand, held earlier this week. These talks focused on stocktaking progress across negotiation tracks and narrowing divergences on outstanding matters.

Goyal and Commissioner Šefčovič reviewed progress in key areas, including market access for goods, rules of origin and services. Both sides reaffirmed strong political commitment to concluding a fair, balanced and ambitious agreement that aligns with their shared values, economic priorities and adherence to a rules-based trading framework.

The visit concluded with both parties expressing renewed confidence and determination to move towards the early conclusion of a modern, comprehensive and mutually beneficial India–EU Free Trade Agreement.
