Geneva, 22nd March. A high-level delegation led by Dr. Neeraj Mittal, Secretary of the Department of Telecommunications, Government of India, participated in crucial meetings at the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Headquarters in Geneva from March 18-20, 2024.
The visit aimed to foster collaboration and explore innovative initiatives in the telecommunications and information and communication technology (ICT) sectors.
1. India Leads Digital Innovation Board: Dr. Neeraj Mittal was unanimously elected as co-chair of the Digital Innovation Board of ITU formed under the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Alliance for Digital Development. The board, comprising ministers and vice ministers of telecom/ICT of 23 member countries of ITU, aims to provide strategic guidance and advocacy for fostering innovation and entrepreneurship in digital development.
2. Initiatives for Digital Development: Various initiatives, including scaling up ITU Area Office India, Digital Transformation Lab, Acceleration centers, and the Global Innovation Centre in India, were discussed during meetings at the ITU Headquarters. Plans were agreed upon to host the next meeting of the Digital Innovation Board in India.
3. Increased Participation of India in ITU Activities: A review meeting at the Permanent Mission of India in Geneva focused on increasing India’s participation in ITU activities, with greater engagement of academia and industry members from India.
4. Bilateral Engagements: Bilateral meetings were held with Japan and Bahrain on the sidelines of the Digital Innovation Board Meeting. India and Japan proposed active collaboration on AI, 5G use cases, and quantum products certification. Similarly, India and Bahrain decided to collaborate on ICT sectors such as Artificial Intelligence, 5G use cases, Cybersecurity, and the development of Data Embassy.
