India–Canada Sign 8 Key Pacts, Set $50B Trade Goal by 2030

New Delhi, 2nd March: India and Canada on Monday unveiled a wide-ranging package of agreements and announcements following the visit of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, marking a fresh push to elevate bilateral ties across trade, energy, defence, education and technology.
CEPA Negotiations Formally Launched
Both sides finalised the Terms of Reference (ToR) for negotiations toward an ambitious Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA). The framework lays out the modalities and structure for discussions covering trade in goods and services, along with other agreed policy areas.
Once concluded, the CEPA is expected to significantly strengthen economic engagement and help achieve the bilateral trade target of USD 50 billion by 2030.
Nuclear Energy Boost: Uranium Supply Deal
A major outcome was the signing of a long-term commercial contract between India’s Department of Atomic Energy and Canada’s Cameco for the supply of uranium ore concentrates.
The agreement supports India’s plan to expand nuclear energy capacity under its long-term goal of achieving 100 GW of nuclear power by 2047.
Critical Minerals and Renewable Energy Cooperation
An MoU on Critical Minerals Cooperation aims to develop secure and resilient supply chains, promote investments, and facilitate technical exchanges in exploration, mining and processing.
Another MoU on Renewable Energy will deepen collaboration in solar, wind, biomass and energy storage, including exchange of best practices and capacity-building initiatives.
Canada also announced its decision to join the Global Biofuels Alliance and the International Solar Alliance, strengthening clean energy partnerships.
Trilateral Technology and Innovation Pact
India, Canada and Australia signed a trilateral MoU under the Australia–Canada–India Technology and Innovation (ACITI) Partnership to advance cooperation in emerging technologies and innovation.
Pulse Protein Centre of Excellence
A Declaration of Intent was signed to establish an India–Canada Pulse Protein Centre of Excellence at NIFTEM-Kundli. The centre will support advanced protein extraction, food processing innovation and fortified pulse products to address micronutrient deficiencies.
Education, Talent and Research
An MoU between AICTE and Mitacs, Canada, will enable up to 300 Indian students annually to undertake fully funded 12-week research internships in Canadian academic institutions beginning 2027.
Additionally, 24 MoUs and partnerships were announced between universities and institutions in areas including Artificial Intelligence, healthcare, agriculture and innovation.
A new Canada-India Joint Talent and Innovation Strategy will also be launched by Universities Canada.
Defence and Strategic Cooperation
Both countries agreed to establish an India–Canada Defence Dialogue to deepen cooperation in defence industries, maritime domain awareness and military exchanges.
India also supported Canada’s bid to join the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) as a Dialogue Partner.
The India–Canada CEO Forum will be reconstituted to strengthen private-sector engagement, and an India–Canada Parliament Friendship Group will be established.
Cultural and People-to-People Ties
An MoU on cultural cooperation aims to enhance people-to-people exchanges through performing arts, visual arts, co-curated projects and emerging creative industries.
Canada will also participate in Bharat Tribes Fest-2026 in New Delhi from March 17 to 30.
The outcomes shows a renewed push to expand India–Canada engagement across economic, technological and strategic domains, with both sides committing to structured dialogue and long-term cooperation.
