Thimphu, 28th Aug: India and Bhutan have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on technical cooperation in agriculture and allied sectors, marking a new milestone in bilateral ties. The agreement was signed in Thimphu by Devesh Chaturvedi, Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Government of India, and Thinley Namgyel, Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, Royal Government of Bhutan.
The MoU aims to strengthen collaboration in agricultural research, livestock health, post-harvest management, value chain development, and knowledge sharing. It underscores both nations’ commitment to food security, sustainable farming, and rural prosperity.

Following the signing, the first Joint Technical Working Group (JTWG) convened to finalize its Terms of Reference and identify immediate priority areas. Both sides hailed the session as a key milestone in expanding bilateral cooperation.
Chaturvedi also shared India’s digital and climate-resilient farming initiatives, highlighting measures in risk mitigation, farmer credit, and sustainable agricultural practices. The discussions covered a wide spectrum, including agriculture, livestock, marketing, cooperatives, food processing, seed sector, and capacity building.

The next JTWG meeting will be held in India at a mutually agreed date. The visit, officials said, reaffirms the tradition of close exchanges between India and Bhutan.
