WASHINGTON – India Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday met with Angolan President Joao Manuel Gonçalves Lourenco the Chair of the African Union, on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Johannesburg.

The meeting was marked by a warm discussion on strengthening bilateral ties between India and Angola.

“Had a wonderful discussion with President Joao Manuel Goncalves Lourenco of Angola, who is also the Chair of the African Union. Had the honour of welcoming him to Delhi earlier this year. India values the friendship with Angola and our nations are working closely to increase trade as well as cultural linkages,” Modi said in a post on handle X.

The meeting highlighted India’s growing engagement with African nations, with Angola a key partner in the continent.

India and Angola have been working to boost trade and investment ties, with Angola seeking Indian expertise in areas like agriculture, healthcare, and infrastructure.

President Lourenco’s visit to India this year underscored the importance of India-Angola relations, with the two countries signing agreements to enhance cooperation in areas like defense, energy, and IT.

The meeting came as India seeks to strengthen its ties with African nations, with a focus on promoting economic growth, peace, and stability in the region.

India is a key partner in Africa’s development, with initiatives like the India-Africa Forum Summit and the Africa-India Movement promoting cooperation in areas like trade, investment, and capacity building.
