New Delhi, 1st Sept: Union Science and Technology Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh on Monday announced that India now accounts for 21 of the 121 bio-companies worldwide, marking a milestone in the country’s push towards global leadership in biomanufacturing.
Launching the High-Performance Biomanufacturing Platforms under the BioE3 (Biotechnology for Economy, Environment and Employment) Policy, Dr. Singh said the initiative would empower startups, scientists, and industry with cutting-edge infrastructure to drive India’s bioeconomy.
“India once followed others; today, we are among the first movers in institutionalising biomanufacturing policy,” the Minister said, calling biotechnology the next big driver of Atmanirbhar Bharat after IT in the 1990s.
The new platforms include 21 BioEnabler facilities nationwide, offering shared infrastructure for startups, SMEs, and academia. Their focus areas include microbial biomanufacturing, smart proteins, sustainable agriculture, carbon capture, marine biotechnology, and next-gen cell and gene therapies.
Dr. Singh underlined that India’s bioeconomy has grown from $10 billion to nearly $100 billion, with a target of $300 billion in the coming years. Biotech startups too have surged from just 50 a decade ago to over 13,000 today, supported by nearly 100 incubators under BIRAC.
The Minister linked biomanufacturing to reducing petroleum imports, advancing healthcare, strengthening agriculture, and enhancing India’s global standing. He added that biotechnology will play a pivotal role in India’s “Viksit Bharat @2047” vision.
