New Delhi, 3rd Sept: Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Tuesday asserted that India stands among the best-performing G20 nations in meeting sustainability commitments, highlighting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s decisive role in shaping global climate action during COP21.
Speaking at the CII’s 20th Global Sustainability Summit in New Delhi, he said India is not only ahead of schedule in renewable energy targets but also offering round-the-clock clean power at globally unmatched rates.
India’s Sustainability Leadership
Goyal underlined that India has already achieved 50% renewable energy capacity, with plans to scale up to 500 GW by 2030. He said the “One Nation, One Grid” framework and transparent bidding processes have made India a global leader in low-cost renewable power.
“Renewable power is now available in India at Rs. 4.60–5.00 per kWh for 24-hour supply—rates unmatched globally,” Goyal noted.
He credited PM Modi’s “Zero Defect, Zero Effect” mantra for integrating quality and sustainability in India’s growth strategy.
Call for Innovation & Inclusive Growth
Goyal urged startups to focus on water harvesting, energy efficiency, and waste management, citing the UJALA LED scheme as an example of small steps driving big change. He stressed that India’s 7.8% GDP growth in Q1 2025 reflects the contributions of all—from corporates to hawkers—and is driven by resilience and self-reliance.
Criticism of Developed Nations
In a sharp critique, the Minister accused developed nations of failing to deliver on Paris Climate commitments, noting that the promised $100 billion annual climate finance remains unfulfilled.
“The developed world has let us down very badly,” he remarked, adding that India’s progress is being achieved despite inadequate global support.
Expanding Global Partnerships
Highlighting India’s rising economic strength, Goyal said the country now contributes 18% to global growth and is expanding trade partnerships. India has already sealed FTAs with Mauritius, Australia, UAE, UK, and the EFTA bloc, and is in talks with the US, EU, Chile, Peru, and New Zealand for further agreements.
Looking Ahead
Goyal emphasized that sustainability is not just about energy, but also about efficient water use, climate resilience, and responsible consumption. He reaffirmed that India’s growth path will remain anchored in sustainability, inclusivity, and competitiveness.
