Guwahati, 2nd Sept: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday launched a sharp attack on All India Jamiat Ulema-i-Hind president Mahmood Madani after the Islamic scholar visited sites in Goalpara that recently witnessed eviction drives.

“Who is Madani? Is he a God? Madani’s bravado was only during Congress rule, not under BJP. If he crosses his limits, I will put him behind bars. I am the CM, not Madani. I am not scared of Madani,” Mr Sarma said, warning that the cleric could face arrest if he “crosses the limits.”

Responding to Sarma’s earlier jibe that he should be “sent to Bangladesh,” Madani hit back, saying, “Those who spread hate in this country should go to Pakistan. Why should they live in this beautiful country of harmony and ancient civilisation?”

Madani, who visited the eviction-hit areas in Goalpara district, demanded that the Assam government follow Supreme Court guidelines on rehabilitation. “We don’t oppose removing encroachments, but the eviction must be just and humane. Deport foreigners, but if they are Indian citizens, rehabilitate them,” he said.

Sarma accused “outsiders” of misleading locals on land disputes and unfairly blaming the BJP for the unrest. “They don’t even inform villagers before entering the land, and later blame the BJP. But BJP doesn’t fear anyone,” he said.

Madani, however, maintained that the state must carry out evictions with a humanitarian approach. “The Supreme Court has repeatedly said there should be a rehabilitation plan. The situation in Goalpara is sad, and the affected families must be rehabilitated,” he added.
