Latehar, 20th Nov.
Hours before the commencement of the second phase of the Jharkhand assembly elections on Wednesday, five trucks were torched in Latehar district, allegedly by Maoist insurgents. The incident occurred around 1:30 AM in the Laat forest area, under the jurisdiction of Herhanj Police Station.
The trucks, involved in coal transportation at the Tubed coal project, were returning after unloading their cargo when they were ambushed by suspected members of the Jharkhand Prastuti Committee (JPC), a Maoist splinter group.

According to Latehar Superintendent of Police Kumar Gaurav, the Maoists set the trucks on fire and left a pamphlet at the scene, threatening to halt all operations at the Tubed coal project unless talks are held with the banned outfit.
The drivers, who were reportedly fired upon, were ordered to abandon their vehicles before the trucks were set ablaze. Police have initiated an investigation and launched raids to apprehend those responsible for the attack.
The second phase of Jharkhand’s elections, covering 38 assembly seats, is being conducted with tight security. Voting began at 7 AM at 14,218 polling booths across 12 districts and will continue until 5 PM. Latehar, which was part of the first phase of polling on November 13, remains under heightened security following the attack.
