Hooch Tragedy in Tamil Nadu: Death Toll Rises to 65

The death toll in the hooch tragedy in Tamil Nadu’s Kallakurichi district climbed to 65 on Sunday, as reported by the district collectorate. At 4 pm on Sunday, 148 individuals have been discharged from hospitals across the state following treatment.

Currently, medical facilities are attending to two patients at the Kallakurichi Government Medical and Hospital, with six individuals undergoing treatment in Puducherry and eight in Salem government hospitals. In total, 16 individuals are currently receiving medical care.

The National Commission for Women (NCW) responded swiftly to the incident, taking suo moto cognizance of media reports on the fatalities. A three-member inquiry committee, headed by NCW Member Khushbu Sundar, has been formed to investigate the matter.

Khushbu Sundar led a delegation of the NCW to visit the families of the victims who tragically lost their lives due to consuming spurious liquor in Kallakurichi district.

On June 28, a delegation from the NDA, including BJP leaders Anil Antony, Arvind Menon, and MP GK Vasan, met with National Commission for Scheduled Castes Chairman Kishore Makwana.

They submitted a memorandum urging swift action to ensure adequate compensation and justice for the victims of the illicit liquor tragedy in Kallakurichi.

The memorandum emphasized the urgent need for justice for the scheduled caste victims affected by the tragic incident.

AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami, accompanied by party workers, initiated a hunger strike demanding a CBI inquiry into the Kallakurichi hooch tragedy. They also called for the resignation of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, citing alleged inefficiencies of the DMK government.
