Hoax Bomb Threats Cause Panic in Delhi Schools, Prompt Criticism of Law and Order

New Delhi, 9th Dec.

Over 40 schools in Delhi received bomb threats via email on Monday, prompting administrations to evacuate students and send them home. Delhi Police later declared the threats a hoax after an initial investigation revealed no suspicious activity.

Prominent schools, including DPS RK Puram, GD Goenka Public School in Paschim Vihar, Mother Mary’s School, British School, Salwan Public School, and Cambridge School, were among those targeted. The email read: “I planted multiple bombs inside (school) buildings. The bombs are small and hidden very well. It will not cause much damage to the building, but many people will be injured when the bombs detonate. If I do not receive $30,000, I will detonate the bombs.”

Reacting to the incident, Delhi Chief Minister Atishi criticized the Union Home Ministry, which oversees Delhi Police, accusing it of failing to maintain law and order. “After daily incidents of extortion, murders, and shootings, schools are now receiving bomb threats. The BJP-led central government has failed in its sole responsibility of providing security to Delhi,” Atishi posted on X.

This development comes just weeks after the Delhi High Court directed the Delhi government and police to draft a comprehensive action plan to address bomb threats. On November 19, the Court instructed stakeholders, including law enforcement, school authorities, and municipal bodies, to create detailed Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for handling such emergencies. Justice Sanjeev Narula’s bench mandated that the SOPs be completed within eight weeks to ensure effective coordination during future incidents.
