Home Minister hails icons of women empowerment, social reform and resistance to colonial rule

New Delhi, 3rd Jan: Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah on Saturday paid rich tributes to social reformer Savitribai Phule and freedom fighter Rani Velu Nachiyar on their respective birth anniversaries, recalling their timeless contributions to women empowerment and India’s freedom struggle.

In a post on X, Shah said Savitribai Phule gave a new direction to women empowerment by connecting women with the fundamental right to education. He noted that she fought against deep-rooted social evils, established the country’s first school for girls and ignited the flame of social reform. He added that her inspiring life will continue to remain a guiding light in nation-building.

Earlier in the day, the Home Minister also paid tributes to Rani Velu Nachiyar Ji, the Queen of Sivaganga, praising her fierce military prowess and unwavering patriotism. Shri Shah said she manifested India’s resolve to defend freedom by defeating colonial rulers and kindling the desire to overthrow British rule.

He stated that Rani Velu Nachiyar will remain an eternal source of inspiration for generations to come.
