New Delhi, 10th March: Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah on Tuesday paid tribute to social reformer Savitribai Phule on her death anniversary, remembering her contributions to women’s education and social equality in India.

In a post on social media platform X, Shah said Savitribai Phule played a historic role in connecting women with education at a time when several social evils prevailed in society.

He noted that Savitribai Phule was a pioneer who challenged deeply entrenched social barriers and worked tirelessly to expand educational opportunities for women.

“Savitribai Phule started a movement to connect women with education at a time when many social evils were prevalent in society. She established the country’s first school for girls and spread the idea of equality among the masses,” Shah said.

Savitribai Phule, a prominent 19th-century social reformer and educationist, is widely regarded as one of the earliest champions of women’s education and social justice in India.

Along with her husband Jyotirao Phule, she established the first school for girls in the country, laying the foundation for modern women’s education in India.

Her work focused on promoting equality, empowering women through education and challenging caste-based discrimination in society.

Paying homage, Shah said the legacy of Savitribai Phule continues to inspire efforts toward social reform, education and gender equality in the country.
