Dhaka, 1st Dec: In yet another disturbing incident of violence against minorities in Bangladesh, 50-year-old Khokon Das, a Hindu man, was brutally attacked by a violent mob and set on fire in the Shariatpur district on December 31. Das sustained serious injuries and has been admitted for medical treatment.

According to local reports, Das was returning home when he was waylaid by a group of attackers armed with sharp weapons. He was allegedly beaten mercilessly before being set ablaze by the mob.

This incident marks the fourth reported attack on Hindus in Bangladesh in December, raising fresh concerns over the safety of minority communities in the country.

On December 24, another Hindu youth, Amrit Mondal (29), was allegedly lynched by a mob in the Hossaindanga area of Kalimohar Union. Earlier, on December 18, Dipu Chandra Das (25) was brutally killed in Bhaluka Upazila of Mymensingh after a mob lynched him over alleged blasphemy accusations. His body was reportedly hung from a tree and set on fire.

Bangladesh has witnessed a spate of violent incidents targeting minorities, particularly Hindus, under the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus, drawing sharp reactions from human rights organisations across the world.

Last week, India expressed grave concern over the “unremitting hostility” against minorities in Bangladesh, including Hindus, Christians and Buddhists, and said it is closely monitoring the situation in its neighbourhood.
