Guwahati, 10th Feb: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday said he has filed a civil defamation case seeking ₹500 crore in damages against senior Congress leaders Jitendra Singh, Bhupesh Baghel, and Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi.
The Chief Minister accused the leaders of making “false, malicious and defamatory” allegations against him during a press conference held in Guwahati last week.
In a post on X, Sarma confirmed that he had moved the court. “Today, I have filed a defamation case seeking ₹500 crore in damages against Congress leaders Jitendra Singh, Bhupesh Baghel and Gaurav Gogoi for making false, malicious and defamatory allegations against me through a press conference,” he wrote.
The dispute follows the February 4 launch of a Congress website titled “Who Is HBS” and a pamphlet that accused Sarma of corruption, misuse of power, and disrespecting cultural icons. The website, which sought details about the Chief Minister’s alleged assets, was reportedly hacked soon after it went live.
Congress had alleged that Sarma and his family owned around 12,000 bighas, or nearly 4,000 acres, of land, and claimed that rules were manipulated to convert agricultural land into industrial land.
Sources said the defamation case has been filed in the Kamrup District Civil Court and further proceedings are under way.
Meanwhile, the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee lodged a police complaint at Dispur Police Station against the BJP and the Chief Minister, alleging misuse of artificial intelligence to malign Gogoi and target Muslims through a now-deleted “point blank shot” video.
APCC senior spokesperson Gopal Sarma accused the BJP of indulging in what he described as the “worst kind of colonisation of politics” in Assam ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. He alleged that an AI-generated video was circulated, portraying a member of a religious minority as Gaurav Gogoi.
Responding to the complaint, Sarma said he would continue to speak as he had been doing. “It is good that they have filed the case… What does communal mean? You all know who I am against,” he said.
The video, posted on Saturday, was deleted after a political backlash. Sarma had on Monday claimed he was unaware of the video.
