Shimla, 25th August. The BJP appointed vice-president Soudan Singh as incharge and senior Jammu and Kashmir leader Devender Singh Rana as co-incharge for the upcoming Himachal Pradesh assembly elections on Thursday.
The decision was made on Thursday at a meeting of the Himachal Pradesh unit of the BJP’s core group.
In a statement, BJP general secretary Arun Singh announced the party’s poll in-charges for Himachal Pradesh, where elections are slated to be held later this year.
The BJP hopes to break the trend of changing governments in Himachal Pradesh by retaining power in the state. The BJP currently has 43 MLAs in the 68-member Himachal Pradesh assembly.
Singh, who is based in Chandigarh, has been in charge of party activities in several northern states, including Himachal Pradesh.
On the other hand, after joining the BJP from the National Conference last year, this is Rana’s first major responsibility in the party.
Insiders in the BJP see this as a reflection of Rana’s rising status within the party, as he has been assigned responsibility for party president J P Nadda’s home state.
