Guwahati, 16th August : A deeply disturbing case of violence has emerged from Bhangagarh market, where a Hindu man, Samrat Dhali, was brutally beaten by a group of nearly 14 Muslims most probably all Miyas men on August 14, 2025 between 3 pm to 3.30 pm . The incident has not only left the victim grievously injured but also raised serious questions about the growing menace of communal mob justice and the erosion of respect for law and constitutional order.
The case, registered at Bhangagarh Police Station under Case No. 138/25 on the complaint of the victim’s father, Bharat Dhali (S/o Lt. Rumoni Dhali), cites sections 126(2)/118(2)/109/3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023, covering unlawful assembly, assault, instigation, and communal targeting.
Hindu Man Targeted in Busy Market
According to eyewitnesses and the FIR, Samrat Dhali was surrounded and attacked in broad daylight by a crowd of Muslim Miya Chicken vendors and their associates in the bustling chicken market of Bhangagarh. Witnesses described the assault as “merciless,” with repeated blows raining down on the lone Hindu man, who had no chance to defend himself.
The attackers reportedly shouted accusations that Samrat had earlier been involved in a road accident two months back and fled the scene, claiming this was their “revenge” as they caught him today. However, instead of reporting the matter to the authorities, they chose to enforce their own justice through violence, shocking onlookers.
Courageous Intervention by Civilians
Amidst the chaos, Advocate Dipradeep Deb and retired civil servant Sri Deepak Sinha, who were passing by in their car, stopped and confronted the mob. On being questioned, one of the assailants openly admitted that they were punishing Samrat themselves for the alleged accident.
Advocate Deb rebuked the attackers, shouting back that only the police and courts had the authority to decide guilt or punishment, not an angry mob. He immediately called the police helpline, in the mean time the crowd of Muslim assailants had fled the spot in fear of being caught.
Soon after, police reached the scene, and Samrat was rushed to hospital, where doctors confirmed he had suffered multiple internal injuries and required urgent medical care.
Communal Angle Cannot Be Ignored
The most alarming detail to emerge was that all the identified attackers belonged to the Muslim and were Miyas probably community wise , while the victim was Hindu alone . This communal angle has sparked outrage among locals, who fear that the assault was not just about an alleged accident but reflected a deeper sense of hostility and impunity.
The complainant, Bharat Dhali, has demanded strict action against the culprits, stating that his son was “targeted because he was Hindu and alone in the market.” Locals, too, have expressed anger, asking why mobs from one community feel emboldened to attack members of another in broad daylight without fear of the law.
A Challenge to Law and Constitution
The incident has sparked debate among civil society and legal experts. That a Hindu man could be beaten by a group of Muslims in a crowded public marketplace—without anyone intervening until two outsiders stepped in—has raised questions about safety and security, It is as if taking a revenge in a group by this community is as viable by default ?
As Advocate Deb later remarked: “This shows complete disregard for the law, the police, and our Constitution. When mobs from one community attack another openly, it is not just violence—it is a direct challenge to our legal system and national unity.” According to sri Deepak and Adv. Dipradeep Deb the Assailants had sticks ,rods and knives in their hands the life of the man was at danger ,fortunately the interruption saved his life .
Police Action and Demand for Justice
Police acted prompt and have registered the case and assured that a manhunt has been launched to identify and arrest all the men involved in the assault. CCTV footage from the market and witness testimonies are being collected to ensure no perpetrator escapes accountability.
Community leaders, however, insist that this must not be treated as an isolated crime but as a serious communal attack. They argue that unless the police act decisively and send a strong message, such incidents will embolden more mobs to target individuals across religious lines.
For now, victim Samrat Dhali remains under medical care, recovering from his injuries. His family has urged the administration to provide security and ensure that the perpetrators are swiftly brought to justice.
The Bhangagarh assault has become a litmus test for the authorities: will the system uphold the Constitutional promise of justice and equality before law, or will mob violence continue to eat into the foundations of communal harmony and rule of law in India?
