Renowned figures Gulzar, famed for his contributions to Hindi cinema and Urdu poetry, and Jagadguru Rambhadracharya, a distinguished Hindu spiritual leader and Sanskrit scholar, have been announced as the recipients of the 58th Jnanpith Award. The esteemed Jnanpith selection committee revealed this decision on Saturday.

Gulzar, widely acclaimed for his mastery in Urdu poetry and significant contributions to Hindi cinema, has previously been honored with prestigious awards such as the Sahitya Akademi Award for Urdu in 2002, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2013, and the Padma Bhushan in 2004. He has also received at least five National Film Awards for his remarkable cinematic works.

Jagadguru Rambhadracharya, the revered founder and head of Tulsi Peeth in Chitrakoot, is a distinguished figure known for his profound spiritual teachings, extensive contributions to education, and authorship of over 100 books.

In a statement, the Jnanpith selection committee announced, “It has been decided to confer the award (for 2023) upon eminent writers from two languages: Sanskrit litterateur Jagadguru Rambhadracharya and renowned Urdu litterateur Shri Gulzar.” This announcement follows Damodar Mauzo, a Goan writer, who was the recipient of the prestigious award for 2022.
