New Delhi, 21st Sept: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday announced that India will implement the next-generation Goods and Services Tax (GST) reforms from 22 September, reducing the system to just two key slabs—5% and 18%.
Addressing the nation via video conferencing, he described the rollout as the start of a nationwide “GST Bachat Utsav” that will cut costs for citizens and energise small businesses.
Greeting the nation on the eve of Navratri, the Prime Minister said the reforms reflect the government’s resolve to simplify taxation and boost savings.
“With lower GST, it will be easier for citizens to fulfill their dreams,” he said, adding that the combined effect of income tax relief and GST cuts would save people more than ₹2.5 lakh crore this year.
PM Modi highlighted that essential goods including food, medicines and daily-use items will now attract only a 5% tax or none at all, making them more affordable for households across the country.
He recalled how GST, first launched in 2017, ended a maze of multiple taxes and checkpoints that once hampered trade.
Calling self-reliance the key to national prosperity, the Prime Minister urged Indians to choose indigenous products. “What the nation needs and what can be made in India should be made within India itself,” he said.
PM Modi appealed to citizens to proudly declare: “I buy Swadeshi, I sell Swadeshi,” stressing that such a shift will accelerate India’s journey towards becoming a developed nation.
The Prime Minister also called on state governments to back the Aatmanirbhar Bharat campaign by supporting local manufacturing and creating an investment-friendly climate.
Concluding his address, PM Modi wished the country a joyous Navratri and expressed confidence that the new GST structure will “accelerate India’s growth story and strengthen every household’s prosperity.”
