Nagpur, 6th Feb. Several thousand members of the Gond Gowari community from various regions of Maharashtra gathered in Nagpur on Monday to demand caste certificates.
The protesters also staged a ‘chakka jam’ (road blockade), according to officials.
For the past 11 days, three members of the community have been engaged in a protest at Sanvidhan Chowk in Nagpur, with representatives of the ‘Adivasi Gond Gowari Jamat Sanvaidhanik Haq Sangharsh Kruti Samiti’ cautioning that they would escalate the agitation if their demands are not addressed.
Gajanan Kohale, working convener of the Adivasi Gond Gowari Jamat Sanvaidhanik Haq Sangharsh Kruti Samiti, stated, “The protesters have come from various districts including Gadchiroli, Gondia, Bhandara, Amravati, Yavatmal, Chandrapur, and others, seeking caste certificates. We have met with Nagpur collector Vipin Itankar to convey our demands.”
He further added, “If our demands are not met, the community will convene again on February 10 and escalate the agitation.”
