New Delhi, 18th August. Pralhad Joshi, Minister of Coal and Mines, has stated that the government will no longer import thermal coal beginning next year.
Inaugurating a workshop on Coking Coal Strategy for Indian Steel Sector in New Delhi today, he stated that the Ministry of Coal is targeting for 900 million tonnes of production this financial year, while Coal India Limited is targeting 700 million tonnes. Joshi said, India’s coal demand will be 1.5 billion tonnes by 2030.
He said that the Indian economy is expanding rapidly and that coal-based power generation is at an all-time high.
The Minister said, domestic coal production has increased by 22%.
He said, coking coal production increased by 15%.
Joshi stated that with Mission Coking Coal, production will increase and move closer to Aatmanirbhar Bharat in the Coking Coal arena.
The Minister said, serious consideration is needed on coking coal and what new technologies can be used in the area. He said that the Coal Ministry has increased incentives for coal gasification, which will lead to the Prime Minister’s vision of achieving 100 million tonnes of coal gasification by 2029-2030.
The Minister said, the government has created an investor-friendly environment. He stated that it has transformed the MMDR Act and established a transparent coal auction process.
Dr. Anil Kumar Jain, Secretary of Coal, and Steel Secretary Sanjay Singh also addressed the workshop.
