The Government announced on Wednesday its ambitious plan to significantly increase the installed nuclear power capacity from 7480 MW to 22800 MW by 2031-32, aiming to diversify and boost the country’s energy sources.

In a written response to a query in the Lok Sabha, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science & Technology, Dr. Jitendra Singh, highlighted the Government’s commitment to promoting atomic energy alongside other energy sources. The Minister outlined several policy measures aimed at enhancing electricity generation through nuclear power.

To elevate the share of nuclear power in the country’s overall electricity generation, Dr. Jitendra Singh detailed various strategic steps taken by the Government. These measures include the administrative approval and financial sanction for the establishment of ten indigenous 700 MW Pressurized Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs) in fleet mode.

Additionally, initiatives such as the creation of the Indian Nuclear Insurance Pool (INIP) for implementing the Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage (CLND) Act, the amendment of the Atomic Energy Act to facilitate Joint Ventures of Public Sector Companies for nuclear power projects, and forging agreements with foreign countries for nuclear power cooperation, including fuel supply, have been undertaken.

The Government’s comprehensive approach underscores its commitment to harnessing nuclear energy as a crucial component of India’s energy mix, aimed at bolstering energy security and sustainability in the long run.
