Govt Plans Legal Action Against E-Commerce Giants Over Sale of Non-BIS Certified Products

New Delhi, 5th June: The central government is preparing to initiate legal proceedings against major e-commerce platforms, including Myntra, Meesho, Bigbasket, Amazon, and Flipkart, for selling products without mandatory certification, sources said on Wednesday.

The move follows a series of raids conducted by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), which reportedly found a large number of uncertified products being sold on these platforms. The uncertified items included toys, kitchen appliances, and electrical equipment, all of which are required to carry the BIS mark under current regulations.

According to sources, BIS inspectors seized over 11,000 non-compliant products from warehouses operated by Amazon and Flipkart during the enforcement drives.

The government is expected to invoke provisions under the BIS Act to take legal action against these firms for compromising consumer safety and violating quality control norms.

The crackdown is part of a broader effort to enforce stricter compliance with India’s quality standards and ensure that online consumers are not exposed to substandard or potentially hazardous goods.
