New Delhi, 10th March: The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Tuesday approved the declaration of Madurai Airport in Tamil Nadu as an International Airport, a move expected to enhance connectivity and strengthen economic activity in the region.
Located in the historic temple city of Madurai, the airport is among the oldest aviation facilities in the state and serves as a key gateway to southern Tamil Nadu.
According to an official statement, granting international status to Madurai Airport will improve regional connectivity and help promote tourism, trade and pilgrimage activities. The decision is also expected to contribute to the broader economic development of the region.
Madurai is widely known for its cultural heritage and religious significance, attracting pilgrims and tourists from across India and abroad. With international operations, the airport is expected to facilitate easier travel for foreign visitors and members of the Indian diaspora.
Officials said the move will also strengthen the airport’s capacity to handle international passenger traffic and support growing business and tourism opportunities in the region.
The government noted that Madurai Airport has the potential to emerge as an important aviation hub in southern Tamil Nadu by connecting international travellers directly with the region’s major cultural and commercial centres.
The decision forms part of the Centre’s broader strategy to expand aviation infrastructure across the country and improve air connectivity to key regional destinations.
