New Delhi, 14th March. In response to increasing incidents of pet dog attacks, the central government has instructed states to prohibit the sale and breeding of 23 breeds of ferocious dogs. This directive includes breeds such as the Pitbull Terrier, American Bulldog, Rottweiler, and Mastiffs, among others.
The Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying has acted upon representations from citizens, forums, and Animal Welfare Organizations advocating for the restriction of certain dog breeds due to safety concerns. The expert panel has identified these 23 breeds, including mixed and crossbreeds, as posing potential dangers to human lives.
Additionally, the government has mandated the sterilization of existing pets of these breeds to curb further breeding. The ban extends to importation, breeding, selling as pets, and any other purposes involving these specified breeds.
