Jorhat, 23rd March: Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi on Monday filed his nomination from the Jorhat Assembly constituency, marking his debut in the state Assembly elections and setting the stage for a high-profile political contest.

Gogoi, who also serves as Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, began his day with visits to multiple religious sites across Jorhat, including a gurdwara, temple, namghar, mosque, and church, as part of a multi-faith outreach initiative.

He later led a massive roadshow from Jorhat Stadium, drawing a large crowd of supporters. The procession lasted nearly three hours before concluding at the District Commissioner’s office, where he filed his nomination papers.

Addressing supporters, Gogoi pitched the election as an opportunity for political change in Assam. “The people want a transparent government. This is a chance to cleanse politics and build a new Assam,” he said.

He also extended his wishes to party candidates across the district, including Titabar nominee Pran Kurmi and Teok candidate Pallavi Saikia Gogoi, along with alliance partners.

The contest in Jorhat is expected to be intense, with Gogoi facing Hitendranath Goswami, a seasoned BJP leader and sitting MLA who has represented the seat five times, including two consecutive terms since 2016.

With nominations closing, the Jorhat constituency is emerging as a key battleground, with the Congress banking on Gogoi’s entry to energise its campaign in Upper Assam.
