Dibrugarh, 18th March: Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Gaurav Gogoi on Wednesday termed the resignation of senior Congress leader and Nagaon MP Pradyut Bordoloi as “unfortunate,” while asserting that the party’s campaign against Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma remains firmly on course.

Bordoloi formally joined the Bharatiya Janata Party after resigning from the Congress, marking a political shift in Assam ahead of upcoming elections.

Speaking to reporters at Dibrugarh Airport, Gogoi said the Congress had given Bordoloi ample opportunities, including a Lok Sabha ticket from Nagaon and a chance for his family member to contest Assembly elections.

“If our current Nagaon Lok Sabha Member of Parliament wants Himanta Biswa Sarma to continue as the Chief Minister, well, that is his decision, which is rather unfortunate,” Gogoi said.

He, however, made it clear that the party’s broader political objective remains unchanged. “This election is much more important than one person. This election is about freeing Assam from the clutches of Himanta Biswa Sarma, from politics of fear and intimidation,” he added.

Downplaying the impact of the defection, Gogoi said internal disagreements are part of political life and should not be seen as a major setback. “I don’t think one difference of opinion over one seat is the reason to leave a party and join the rival,” he said.

The development is being seen as part of ongoing political realignments in Assam, even as parties intensify preparations for the upcoming electoral battle.
