Goa Govt Finalises Land to Establish Permanent Campus of IIT Goa

Panaji, 19th Oct. The Goa government has finalized a site for the permanent campus of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Goa. Currently, the IIT Goa operates from a temporary campus.

The chosen site is a plateau in Rivona village in South Goa, approximately 80 kilometers from the state capital Panaji.

The government made the decision last week, selecting a 10 lakh square meter plot of land owned by a private party. The land is flat, making it suitable for constructing the necessary infrastructure for the IIT campus.

Previously, the government faced opposition to the project on two occasions. In January 2021, the proposed campus was relocated from Shel-Melavali village in North Goa due to protests by villagers.

Another site in Cortalim was then identified but abandoned due to local opposition.

However, this time, the government has gained the support of the local community.

The establishment of the IIT Goa campus is expected to bring development to the region. It will create employment and business opportunities for the local people.

The management of IIT Goa has agreed to prioritize hiring locals for lower-level positions.

The project is located in the Sanguem assembly constituency, represented by Minister Subhash Phal Desai, who has personal connections to the area.

Phal Desai shared that he used to visit this place in his childhood to take care of cattle and has childhood friends from the area.

He believes that the presence of the IIT Goa campus in Rivona will raise awareness about higher education among the local residents. Since 2016, IIT Goa has been operating from a temporary campus in Farmagudi, South Goa.
