Ghulam Nabi Azad Quits Congress with Scathing Attack on Rahul Gandhi

New Delhi, 26th August. Ghulam Nabi Azad, former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and Congress party veteran of several decades, resigned from the party’s primary membership on Friday, accusing Rahul Gandhi of “childish behavior,” “immaturity,” and “demolishing the consultative mechanism” in the party.

Azad resigned from all party positions before giving up his primary membership in the party he has served for over 60 years.

In a hard-hitting five-page resignation letter addressed to Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi, Azad has named Rahul Gandhi as one of the main reasons behind his decision to quit the party.

In his letter, Azad wrote that after Rahul Gandhi was appointed vice president of the party (January 2013), “the entire consultative mechanism that existed earlier was demolished,” making way for “sycophants” and ignoring senior leaders.

Rahul Gandhi was also blamed by Azad for the 2014 Lok Sabha debacle. Azad stated in his letter that the situation within the party deteriorated following the 2019 General Elections, when Rahul Gandhi stepped down after “insulting” the party’s senior leaders. Azad also slammed the “remote control model,” claiming that “all important decisions were being taken by Rahul Gandhi or, worse, his security guards and PAs” while Sonia Gandhi was the interim president.

While blaming Rahul Gandhi for his “childish behavior,” Azad called “the entire organizational election process a farce and a sham.” Azad also advised Sonia Gandhi to concentrate on “Congress Jodo” rather than “Bharat Jodo Yatra.”

The news comes just days after Azad declined key positions in the Jammu and Kashmir Congress shortly after his appointment was announced. Azad was reportedly dissatisfied with his appointment to the J&K political affairs committee, perceiving it as a demotion.

Azad is the second G-23 leader to resign from the party, following Anand Sharma’s resignation. Azad led a group of 23 leaders who sought radical changes in the party’s organizational structure and functioning. Kapil Sibal, another G-23 member, resigned from the party just before the Rajya Sabha elections.
