Ghaziabad, 9th Feb: The deaths of three minor sisters in Ghaziabad have taken a disturbing turn, with the police investigation uncovering deep family turmoil, multiple marriages, and serious financial distress.

Pakhi, 12, Prachi, 14, and Nishika, 16, allegedly jumped from the ninth floor of their apartment in Bharat City last week. Initial reports suggested the extreme step followed a dispute over their alleged gaming addiction after their phones were taken away.

However, the probe into their father, Chetan Kumar, has revealed a complex and troubling domestic situation. Police said Kumar lived with three wives—Sujata, Hina, and Tina—and their five children in a single room of a three-bedroom flat.

According to investigators, Kumar married Sujata in 2010, her sister Hina in 2013, and Tina, who had converted to Hinduism, in 2023. Officials said his explanation that he married Hina because Sujata could not conceive does not match the ages of the children. Police also said he initially concealed details about his third marriage.

With Sujata, Kumar had a daughter and a son with special needs. With Hina, he had two daughters—Prachi and Pakhi—who died in the incident along with Nishika, Sujata’s elder daughter. Tina, the youngest wife, has a three-year-old daughter with him.

Police said none of the women had lodged complaints regarding the multiple marriages, and investigators believe they had consented to the arrangements.

Post-mortem reports confirmed that the girls died due to severe head injuries. Assistant Commissioner of Police Atul Kumar Singh said there were no signs of sexual assault. The minors’ phones, including one sold shortly before the incident, have been sent for forensic examination.

Investigators also recovered a 30-page diary reportedly written by the girls. Preliminary findings indicate they were upset after their access to Korean dramas, K-Pop content, and games was restricted.

The probe has also brought attention to a 2018 incident in which another woman—Sujata and Hina’s sister—died after falling from a balcony while visiting the family. The case was treated as accidental, and no complaint was filed.

Police further revealed that Kumar, a stockbroker, is burdened with debts of around ₹2 crore. He had allegedly sold one of his daughters’ mobile phones to pay an electricity bill and had not sent the girls back to school after the pandemic due to financial problems.

Authorities said the investigation is ongoing, and forensic reports along with the diary analysis are expected to shed more light on the circumstances leading to the tragedy.
