The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has launched a training program for food handlers at all State/UT Bhawans and government office canteens in the National Capital as part of its efforts to bolster the nationwide Food Safety Ecosystem through its Food Safety Training and Certification (FoSTaC) initiative.

Training sessions have been conducted at four State Bhawans – Bihar, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Sikkim, where all food handlers received essential training. Additionally, training has been held at the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), North Block. These programs aim to elevate food safety standards across State/UT Bhawans and government office canteens. Future training sessions are planned for Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Manipur Bhawans, with further training to be conducted in all government office canteens.

This initiative aligns with the commitment made by the Hon’ble Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare on World Food Safety Day, June 7, 2023, to train 25 lakh food business operators over the next three years. It signifies a significant stride toward fostering a safer and healthier food environment for Indian citizens.

FoSTaC, a flagship initiative of FSSAI, is crafted to provide training to food handlers involved in the food business. The training programs cover various topics including food safety regulations, personal hygiene, allergen management, food operation and control, documentation, labelling, training methodologies, and emerging trends in the food industry. The goal is to cultivate a culture of continuous learning and improvement within the food sector. Participants who complete the training successfully will receive the Food Safety Supervisor (FSS) certificate, recognized nationwide. In FY 2023-24, a total of 3,58,224 food handlers have undergone training under the FoSTaC program nationwide.

Extending FoSTaC training to canteens in all State/UT Bhawans and government offices will expand its reach, empowering individuals in the food supply chain with the necessary knowledge and skills to uphold food safety standards.
