Erode, 11th Jan. Former MLA V C Chandra Kumar has been named as the DMK candidate for the upcoming Erode East Assembly by-election, scheduled for February 5. The announcement was made by Chief Minister and DMK president M K Stalin after reaching an agreement with the alliance partner Congress, which previously held the seat.

The bypoll is being held due to the death of senior Congress leader EVKS Elangovan, the former MLA for the seat.

Chandra Kumar, who initially left DMK and joined the DMDK in 2011, won the Erode East seat before being defeated by the AIADMK in 2016. He later returned to DMK and currently serves as joint secretary in its propaganda wing. According to party sources, Chandra Kumar is expected to file his nomination on January 13.
