New Delhi, 4th Aug:
The President of India, after consultation with the Chief Justice of India, has appointed five new judges to the Allahabad High Court. The appointments aim to address the significant number of vacancies at what is considered the largest High Court in the country.

The newly appointed judges, all judicial officers, are:

  • Pramod Kumar Srivastava
  • Abdul Shahid
  • Santosh Rai
  • Tej Pratap Tiwari
  • Zafeer Ahmad

The appointments are effective from the date the new judges assume charge of their respective offices.

The Allahabad High Court has a sanctioned strength of 160 judges, but it has been operating with a much lower number, leading to a substantial backlog of cases. The addition of these five judges is a step towards filling the vacancies and strengthening the judicial infrastructure.

The appointments were made through the collegium system, with the Supreme Court Collegium recommending the names of three of the appointees in July and the other two in April of this year. All five judges have been elevated from the subordinate judiciary, a standard practice in the appointment process for High Courts.
