The Government of India had officially notified the Citizenship (Amendment) Rules, 2024 on March 11, 2024. These rules outline the application process, the role of District Level Committees (DLCs), and the State Level Empowered Committees (ECs) in the scrutiny and granting of citizenship.
Applications were received from individuals belonging to Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Buddhist, Parsi, and Christian communities from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan. These applicants sought refuge in India up to December 31, 2014, due to persecution on religious grounds.
The District Level Committees, chaired by designated officers, meticulously verified the documents submitted by the applicants. Upon successful verification, the applicants were administered the oath of allegiance. Subsequently, the applications were forwarded to the State Level Empowered Committees for further processing.
The Empowered Committee in Delhi, under the leadership of the Director (Census Operation), meticulously scrutinized the applications and approved citizenship for 14 individuals. Director (Census Operation) then presented citizenship certificates to these successful applicants.
It’s noteworthy that the entire application process was conducted online, reflecting the government’s commitment to leveraging technology for efficient governance.
