Chandigarh, 6th Nov:
The Punjab Police have registered an FIR against Punjab Congress President and MP Amarinder Singh Raja Warring for allegedly making casteist remarks against former Union Home Minister late Buta Singh during a public event in Tarn Taran.

The complaint was filed by Sarabjot Singh Sidhu, son of the late Buta Singh, under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, and Sections 353 and 196 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, for statements conducing to public mischief and promoting enmity between groups.

Sidhu alleged that Warring’s remarks, including references such as “Kala Mazhabi Sikh” and “Black Sikh”, were deeply offensive, casteist, and defamatory, intended to insult the Mazhabi Sikh community in public view. The complaint said the comments caused emotional distress and could disturb communal harmony across Punjab.

Police officials confirmed that an inquiry is underway, with evidence being reviewed to determine further legal action.

Amid growing backlash, Warring issued an unconditional apology, stating on X:

“Deeply respectful of the late Sardar Buta Singh ji, who was like a father figure to me. If my words caused any unintended hurt, I offer my sincerest and unconditional apologies.”

The Punjab State Scheduled Castes Commission has taken suo motu notice of the incident after a video of Warring’s remarks surfaced online. Commission Chairman Jasvir Singh Garhi has directed Warring to submit a written reply by November 6, while the Returning Officer of Tarn Taran must provide a report by November 4.

The Tarn Taran bypoll, which was necessitated after the death of AAP MLA Kashmir Singh Sohal on June 27, will be held on November 11, with counting on November 14.
