New Delhi, 3rd Dec: Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Wednesday told the Lok Sabha that fake news has emerged as a serious threat to India’s democratic fabric and must be addressed with a stronger legal framework. Responding to questions on misinformation and social media misuse, he said the rapid spread of fake content and AI-generated deepfakes poses risks that require firm and immediate action.
The Minister said certain ecosystems on social media platforms do not wish to abide by the Constitution or comply with laws passed by Parliament, necessitating stricter rules. He reiterated that misinformation, manipulated media and deepfakes have the potential to distort public opinion and undermine trust in institutions.
Vaishnaw informed the House that the Government has recently introduced new rules, including a mandatory takedown provision requiring removal of flagged content within 36 hours. A draft rule focused on identifying and mitigating AI-generated deepfakes has also been published, and consultations with stakeholders are underway.
He appreciated the Parliamentary Committee for its detailed recommendations, thanking MP Nishikant Dubey and members for their work in strengthening the legal architecture around misinformation and digital safety.
The Minister said the challenge involves striking the right balance between safeguarding freedom of speech and protecting democracy. He noted that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, the Digital India initiative has democratised technology and expanded access, giving every citizen a platform to express themselves. At the same time, he emphasised that stronger systems and institutions are essential to preserve societal trust.
