New Delhi, 14th May: In light of growing security concerns and escalating tensions between India and Pakistan along the Line of Control (LoC), External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar is set to receive a significant security upgrade. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) recently submitted a formal request to enhance his protection, prompting a review by both the Delhi Police and the Union Home Ministry.
As per multiple media reports, the Delhi Police has recommended a fresh threat assessment to the Union Home Ministry. Among the measures under consideration are the deployment of a bulletproof vehicle in Jaishankar’s convoy, an increased number of security spotters around his residence and office, a dedicated escort car, and a revised call sign to enhance operational security.
The move comes after heightened social media activity and strong statements by Indian officials, including Jaishankar, criticizing Pakistan following India’s strikes on terror camps across the border. The security of officials who have openly condemned cross-border terrorism is now under close review.
Delhi Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora recently chaired a high-level meeting with senior officers to evaluate the security arrangements of VIPs identified as high-risk, particularly those with public records of denouncing Pakistan’s alleged support for terrorism.
Currently, Dr. Jaishankar is protected under Z-category security cover provided by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). This includes six armed mobile security personnel and ten additional officers posted at his residence. Notably, he had previously been accorded the higher Z-plus category, which may now be reinstated.
The police are also reviewing security provisions for Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, reflecting a broader concern about the safety of India’s top diplomatic officials amid worsening bilateral relations.
Ceasefire Holds, But India Uncompromising on Terror
Even as the 2021 ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan remains in place along the LoC, Jaishankar recently reaffirmed India’s unwavering stance on terrorism. “Ceasefire or not, there can be no compromise when it comes to terrorism,” he said, underscoring India’s national security doctrine.
What Is Z-Plus Security?
Z-plus security is the highest level of VIP protection after the Special Protection Group (SPG) cover, reserved for the Prime Minister. It includes a 55-member team comprising CRPF or NSG commandos, bulletproof vehicles, and 24/7 protection in three shifts. The upgrade also involves advanced surveillance, electronic jamming systems, and trained personnel with quick response capability.
Currently, about 200 individuals benefit from CRPF’s VIP security program, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah and senior Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. Several high-profile celebrities are also under the force’s protection.
The final decision on the proposed upgrade to Jaishankar’s security is expected after the Home Ministry’s assessment report, which is likely to be submitted later this month.
