New Delhi, 15th Dec. A group of Indian nationals evacuated from crisis-hit Syria returned to New Delhi on Saturday, recounting harrowing experiences of chaos and violence but commending the Indian Embassy for its unwavering support during the ordeal.

Sunil Dutt, a mechanical engineer from Chandigarh, described the panic-stricken situation in Syria, with streets overrun by anti-social elements, looting, and constant bombings. “It was terrifying. The Indian Embassy was in constant touch, advising us to stay calm and not open doors for our safety,” Dutt said after arriving at Delhi airport.

The evacuation comes in the wake of Syria’s government collapsing as rebel forces seized Damascus and other key cities. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced the safe return of 77 Indians who had expressed their desire to leave. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal detailed the evacuation process, saying Indian Embassy personnel in Damascus escorted evacuees to the Lebanon border, where arrangements were made for their immigration and onward journey home.

Sachit Kapoor, a Greater Noida resident who worked in Syria for seven months, recounted how the situation deteriorated rapidly on December 7. “We were moved to Damascus, surrounded by fire and bombing. Thanks to the embassy, we were smoothly shifted to Lebanon and had no issues,” Kapoor said, praising the MEA for ensuring safe lodging and food during their transit.

Ratan Lal, who had spent five years in Syria, and Chetan Lal, a glass manufacturing professional from Haryana with a decade of experience in the country, expressed similar gratitude for the evacuation efforts. “The Indian Embassy, along with Lebanese and Syrian authorities, provided significant support during our return journey,” Chetan said.

Despite the turmoil, the Indian Embassy in Damascus remains operational, Jaiswal confirmed. India has also called for a peaceful and inclusive Syrian-led political resolution to restore stability to the war-torn nation.

The evacuated Indians expressed relief upon returning home, thanking the Indian government and embassies involved for their efficient coordination and humanitarian assistance during the crisis.
