WASHINGTON – European Union leaders on Tuesday issued a joint statement on Greenland, asserted that the Arctic nation belongs to its people and any decision of matters concerning it will be taken by Greenland and Denmark.
The joint statement was issued by French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Poland Prime Prime Minister Donald, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Denmark Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, media reported.
European leaders asserted that Arctic security remains a key priority for Europe and it is critical for international and transatlantic security, the joint statement said
They said that NATO has made clear that the Arctic region is a priority and European Allies are stepping up.
“We and many other Allies have increased our presence, activities and investments, to keep the Arctic safe and to deter adversaries.”
US President Donald Trump after Venezuela operation said “We need Greenland.”
EU leaders reiterated that the Kingdom of Denmark including Greenland is part of NATO.
They called on the NATO allies, including the United States, to uphold the principles of the UN Charter, including sovereignty, territorial integrity and the inviolability of borders.
“These are universal principles, and we will not stop defending them,” they vowed.
The leaders said that the US is an essential partner in this endeavor, as a NATO ally and through the defence agreement between the Kingdom of Denmark and the United States of 1951.
He declared, “Greenland belongs to its people. It is for Denmark and Greenland, and them only, to decide on matters concerning Denmark and Greenland.”
The statement came days after Trump said that the United States “needs” Greenland for national security reasons.
He argued that Greenland’s location in the Arctic has become crucial due to rising activity by Russia and China in the region.
