Washington, 7th Feb: Newly released documents from the US Justice Department have revealed that disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein maintained contact with Indian businessman Anil Ambani between 2017 and 2019, months before Epstein was arrested on federal sex-trafficking charges.
The records show that the two men exchanged messages discussing global affairs, business matters and personal topics, and made plans to meet in person. A representative for Ambani declined to comment on the disclosures.
The communications form part of a larger cache of documents that shed light on Epstein’s network of connections among businessmen, politicians and academics across the world, even after his 2008 conviction in Florida for procuring minors for prostitution. Epstein continued to maintain access to wealthy and influential figures until his arrest in 2019, and later died by apparent suicide while in custody.
According to the documents, Epstein also ordered several digital books about the Ambani family in March 2017. The titles reportedly included works on the family’s business history and the well-known dispute between brothers Anil and Mukesh Ambani after the death of their father Dhirubhai Ambani in 2002.
Anil Ambani, chairman of the Reliance Group, once ranked among India’s richest individuals but has faced financial setbacks in recent years. His elder brother Mukesh Ambani now leads Reliance Industries and is considered Asia’s wealthiest person, with a vast business empire spanning energy, telecom, retail and media.
The documents also indicate that Epstein mentioned Ambani in conversations with several prominent figures, including spiritual author Deepak Chopra and business leaders in the United States. In one exchange after a scheduled meeting in 2019, Epstein wrote to Ambani that it had been “a treat” seeing him.
Separately, Anil Ambani continues to face scrutiny in India. Earlier this week, the Supreme Court directed federal investigating agencies to expedite a probe into an alleged bank-loan fraud case involving his companies.
The newly released records have intensified scrutiny of Epstein’s global network, which extended beyond the United States and into business and social circles across multiple countries.
