New Delhi, 25th June.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi marked the 49th anniversary of the Emergency by lambasting the Congress party for its role in subverting democratic norms and trampling on constitutional rights. In a series of posts on social media, PM Modi denounced the Congress, stating that those responsible for imposing the Emergency have forfeited any claim to uphold the Constitution.

“The dark days of the Emergency serve as a stark reminder of how the Congress undermined fundamental freedoms and disregarded the Constitution, which holds immense reverence among all Indians,” Modi declared.

Highlighting historical grievances, Modi accused the Congress of repeatedly invoking Article 356, curbing press freedom, undermining federalism, and violating constitutional principles during its tenure. “The mindset that led to the Emergency remains entrenched within the same party. Their superficial displays of respect for the Constitution cannot mask their disdain for its values,” he added.

Recalling the draconian measures of June 25, 1975, when then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi imposed Emergency, Modi described it as a period where dissent was suppressed, opposition leaders were incarcerated, and civil liberties were suspended. He emphasized that the day should serve as a tribute to all those who bravely resisted the Emergency regime.

“The Congress government of that time, in its desperate bid to cling to power, trampled upon every democratic norm and transformed the nation into a prison,” Modi asserted, condemning the social and political repercussions of the era. He also criticized the Congress for perpetuating regressive policies that targeted marginalized communities.

This comes amid heated exchanges in the 18th Lok Sabha, where PM Modi clashed with Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge over historical grievances and the legacy of authoritarian governance.
