Embracing the Light: The Symbolism of Deepawali

By Dr Diwakar Shukul, London

Deepawali, also known as the Festival of Lights, is a vibrant and joyous celebration that transcends geographical boundaries and cultural differences. This festival, celebrated by millions worldwide, symbolises the victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and good over evil. As we gather with family and friends to illuminate our homes and hearts, it serves as a powerful reminder of the deeper truths about our existence.

From Darkness to Light
At its core, Deepawali signifies a profound journey from darkness to light. This transition mirrors the human experience, where ignorance (Avidya) and illusion often cloud our understanding. In our lives, these shadows manifest through ego, lust, and self-centeredness, leading us astray from our true selves. However, just as a single lamp can dispel the darkest night, self-knowledge and awareness can illuminate our paths, guiding us away from these distractions.

The act of lighting lamps during Deepawali is not merely a festive tradition; it symbolises our commitment to nurturing this inner light. Each lamp represents the potential within us to overcome ignorance and embrace wisdom. When we come together as a community, lighting up our surroundings with millions of lamps, we amplify this collective effort toward achieving supreme consciousness. The brilliance of these lights serves as a testament to the power of unity and shared purpose in our spiritual journeys.

The Role of Bhagwan Ganesh and Ma Lakshmi Jee
In the context of Deepawali, the worship of Ganesh and Lakshmi holds significant meaning. Lord Ganesh, often depicted seated on a mouse, embodies the Mooladhara chakra, which represents our foundation and basic instincts. The mouse symbolizes desires that can either drive us forward or lead us into chaos if left unchecked. By praying to Ganesh, we are reminded to acknowledge our desires while striving for balance and control over them.

Shubh Lakshmi, the goddess of prosperity, is revered during this festival as well. Her presence reminds us that true prosperity comes not from ill-gotten gains but from righteousness and ethical means. As we seek abundance in our lives, we must align our actions with our values, ensuring that our pursuits are grounded in integrity and kindness.

A Celebration of Wisdom
This Deepawali, let us celebrate not just with lights and festivities but with wisdom and reflection. The festival encourages us to recognise the darkness that exists within and around us while empowering us to rise above it. By cultivating self-knowledge and understanding the interconnectedness of our actions, we can transform our lives and the world around us.

As we pray for blessings from Ganesh and Lakshmi, let us commit to living with righteousness, embracing our collective responsibility to foster light in our communities. May our homes shine brightly with the lamps of love, compassion, and wisdom, illuminating the path for ourselves and others.

In the spirit of Deepawali, let us enjoy the festivities while remembering the deeper significance of this beautiful festival. May the light of self-knowledge guide us through the darkness, and may we come together as a united force, lighting the way to a more conscious and harmonious existence. Shubh Deepawali!
