New Delhi, 29th July: The Editors Guild of India today expressed profound sorrow over the demise of its former general secretary and editor of Mainstream weekly, Sumit Chakravartty. Chakravartty passed away in Kolkata on Saturday, July 26, after a prolonged illness.
Chakravartty served as the General Secretary of the Editors Guild of India between 1999 and 2001, having also held various other positions within the esteemed organization. As the son of the legendary journalist-editor Nikhil Chakravartty, he was widely recognized for his unwavering commitment to principled journalism. Under his leadership, Mainstream weekly maintained its respectability and cultivated a dedicated readership, through which he consistently championed the progressive ideas he inherited.
His passing leaves a significant void in the journalistic community, yet Chakravartty’s legacy is expected to continue inspiring journalists who are dedicated to their cause. The Editors Guild of India conveyed its condolences through a statement signed by its President Anant Nath, General Secretary Ruben Banerjee, and Treasurer K Ve Prasad.
