ECI Clears Nomination Scrutiny, 2,140 Candidates in Poll Fray

New Delhi, 26th March: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has completed the scrutiny of nominations for the upcoming Assembly elections in Assam, Kerala, and Puducherry, along with bye-elections in multiple states.
According to the ECI, a total of 2,140 candidates remain in the fray after scrutiny across 296 Assembly constituencies in the three poll-bound regions. Assam accounts for 789 candidates across 126 seats, Kerala has 985 candidates for 140 seats, while Puducherry has 366 candidates across 30 constituencies.
In addition, 66 candidates are contesting bye-elections in five constituencies across Goa, Karnataka, Nagaland and Tripura.
The scrutiny process was conducted by Returning Officers in the presence of candidates and their representatives, with the entire exercise being videographed to ensure transparency. Lists of validly nominated candidates, along with their photographs, have been displayed at designated locations.
The last date for withdrawal of nominations is March 26 till 3:00 PM.
Polling for these constituencies is scheduled to be held on April 9, marking a crucial phase in the 2026 electoral calendar.
