Lucknow, 7th Jan: The Election Commission on Tuesday released the draft revised electoral rolls for Uttar Pradesh following the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), revealing that 2.89 crore voters have been removed from the state’s voter list.

Of the total deletions, 2.17 crore voters were removed as they have moved, 46.23 lakh were found to be deceased, and 25.47 lakh were deleted for being registered at more than one place. The final electoral rolls will be published on March 6.

Uttar Pradesh had around 15.44 crore registered voters when the SIR was announced on October 27, 2025. As part of the process, Booth Level Officers (BLOs) conducted door-to-door verification and collected signed enumeration forms. Out of the total electorate, 12.55 crore forms were returned, accounting for 81.03 per cent of voters. However, forms from about 18.7 per cent of voters were not received, leading to the large-scale deletions.

Official data shows that Lucknow recorded the highest reduction in voters. The capital city’s electorate dropped from 39.9 lakh to 27.9 lakh, marking a 30 per cent decline. Lalitpur also saw a decrease of 10 per cent, with voter numbers falling from 9.5 lakh to 8.6 lakh.

The enumeration process had to be extended three times amid administrative challenges, uneven workloads of BLOs, and the addition of new polling stations. The scale of deletions has sparked political reactions, with Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav alleging that the SIR process has disproportionately affected certain sections of voters.
