Durgapur, 31st Oct: The Durgapur Sub-Divisional Court on Friday rejected the bail petitions of two of the six accused in the alleged gang rape case of a second-year medical student and committed the case for fast track trial.

Defence counsel Advocate Puja Kurmi, representing the accused, stated that the chargesheet had already been submitted to the court. She said the accused had been formally charged following the submission of the chargesheet, and the defence was verifying the validity and completeness of the documents.

Kurmi further noted that bail applications were filed on behalf of Sheikh Riazuddin and Sheikh Shafique, against whom no rape or gang rape charges were framed. “They have been charged under other sections, including one related to dacoity,” she said. However, after hearing the state’s argument, the court rejected both bail pleas.

Public Prosecutor Bibhas Chattopadhyay informed that the prosecution sought a fast track trial, which the court accepted. “We urged for immediate trial proceedings, and the case has been sent to the Additional District and Sessions Court. The trial will commence from tomorrow,” he said.

After hearing both sides, the magistrate remanded all six accused to judicial custody for another day and directed the case to be placed before the Additional District and Sessions Court at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday.

On Thursday, the New Township Police submitted a detailed chargesheet naming all six accused, with offences including sexual assault, criminal conspiracy, and destruction of evidence. The charges were based on statements, medical reports, and forensic findings gathered during the investigation.

The six accused were produced before the court on Friday under tight security following four days of judicial custody.
