Chandigarh, 7th Feb: Former Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi has launched a fresh attack on the ruling Aam Aadmi Party government, alleging that the drug menace in the state has worsened despite official campaigns.
Channi released a video in which he is seen interacting with two individuals who claim that drug peddlers are operating openly across Punjab and can deliver narcotics within five minutes. The claims were presented as evidence that the drug trade continues to flourish despite the government’s “Yudh Nashian Virudh” campaign.
In the video, the individuals alleged that complaints to the police often do not result in immediate action. They also claimed that even when arrests are made, the accused are frequently released soon afterward. One of the individuals recounted a personal tragedy, alleging that a relative died due to drug addiction and that the alleged peddler was released before the family could complete the last rites.
The video questioned the effectiveness of the state government’s anti-drug campaign, claiming that the problem has worsened since its launch.
The AAP responded sharply, accusing Channi of irresponsibly promoting drug peddlers by publicising such claims. Party leaders said that instead of supporting the government’s efforts to curb narcotics, the former chief minister was creating fear and inadvertently amplifying illegal networks.
The exchange has reignited the political battle in Punjab over the handling of the drug menace, an issue that continues to dominate public discourse and election narratives in the state.
